Our History
The Sackville Swim Club (SSC) is a not-for-profit organization founded in September 1975 by Barbara L. Campbell. An accomplished swimmer herself, Campbell coached and trained numerous successful athletes who excelled not only in Atlantic Canada but nationally. During her tenure at SSC, she also founded and directed the Olympic Way Swim Program. As the team grew throughout the 1980s, Campbell spearheaded fundraising activities for the club, including the annual Swim-A-Thon, which remains the club's largest fundraiser today.
Thirteen years after the club's establishment, Saint John native, John Peters, arrived and assumed the role of Head Coach. A Canada Games swimmer who represented Team New Brunswick, Peters was a graduate of both Holland College and Mount Allison University. For the next 27 years, Peters guided SSC members to provincial championships and beyond as a certified Level III NCCP Coach. Many of these swimmers held—or continue to hold—provincial and club records across multiple categories. Under his mentorship, SSC became a formidable competitor despite facing much larger clubs. Peters, who received Coach of the Year awards from Swimming New Brunswick, developed athletes who achieved success at the highest levels of competition, including Canada Games, Junior and Senior Championships, and Olympic Trials.
Following Peters' retirement in 2015, Stephanie Lebreton served as SSC's Head Coach for four years. Drawing on her experience in Ontario, Lebreton continued the club's tradition of success. During her tenure, she introduced a successful Learn to Swim program through the National Lifeguard Association, which continues to promote water safety among all ages within the club.
In May 2019, Brenna Maddalena assumed the position of Head Coach, bringing fresh energy to the pool deck. A familiar face at the club, Maddalena has been a member since age five. Throughout her years with SSC, she competed at high levels including East Coast Championships and Canada Game Trials, earning gold medals at both New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Provincials while maintaining Top 10 status in her home province. Her first paid position involved coaching SSC's youngest group (originally called the Marlins), which evolved into an assistant coaching role under both John Peters and Stephanie Lebreton.
Maddalena briefly stepped away from coaching while attending Mount Allison University, where she swam for the Mounties and served as Team Captain in her senior year, helping guide the women's squad to a second-place finish in the AUS championship. After retiring from competitive swimming in 2017, she became Assistant Coach of the MTA Mounties alongside John Peters before returning to her roots with SSC in Fall 2018. Now a certified Level III coach, Maddalena continues to bring energy to our growing and evolving club.
